Leyte Park Resort Hotel, Tacloban City
The Alternative Law Groups (ALG), through KAISAHAN, conducted a two-day training-orientation on various topics necessary to the implementation of the Hustisya Natin program last September 8-9 at the Leyte Park Resort Hotel in Tacloban City.
It was participated by 25 representatives from different organizations and sectors, which were identified as potential court monitors that will be forming the local CSO network in Region 8.
The participants include representatives from the media (radio journalist and Sumbungan ng Bayan: Ka Roger), the academe (UP Tacloban), people’s organizations from Leyte and Eastern Samar (Ormoc-Kananga Leyte Farmers Federation [ORKALEFF], Homonhon Environment Rescuers Organization [HERO], Protect Manicani Society Inc [PROMISI], and Homonhon Youth Eco-Savers Organization [HYEO], and Sarilaya); and NGOs working on issues related to environmental protection (Philippine-Misereor Partnerships, Inc), child rights (Save the Children and Exodus From Child Labor To Integration, Play, Socialization and Education [ECLIPSE], Inc.), land rights (PHILNET), women’s rights (Pambansang Koalisyon ng Kababaihan sa Kanayunan [PKKK]), and rural development (Philippine Rural Reconstruction Movement [PRRM], Pagtinabangay Foundation, Inc. [PFI], and Save Ormoc Bay Aggrupation [SOBA]).
As one of the initial activities of the capacity building component of Hustisya Natin, the discussions and workshops focused on topics such as (1) the concept of law and the legal system; (2) the judiciary; (3) court and administrative procedures and special judicial remedies; (4) judicial ethics; and (5) human rights. These were discussed by Atty. Tonet Ramos of ALG, Atty. Ronnan Reposar of the Environmental Legal Assistance Center (ELAC), Mr. Gilacio Bigute of the Commission on Human Rights (CHR), Atty. Rolly Francis Peoro of KAISAHAN, and Atty. Anne Maureen Manigbas of the Ateneo Human Rights Center (AHRC).
AHRC also facilitated a quick focus group discussion on the development of a CSO monitoring mechanism that will be used for the program after the training.
